Louise had intended to try Matthew without a dummy at night next week, and we had prepared him by telling him a while ago that when he is three he would have to throw his dummy in the bin. On Thursday, he surprised us by actually throwing his dummy in the bin before he went to bed and, even more remarkably, sleeping for the whole night without it. Thinking we had overcome what we had expected to be a major hurdle with no problems at all, we discovered otherwise when Louise got Matthew up yesterday morning and he started screaming. It turned out that he wanted his dummy when he woke up, even though he's not had one in the daytime for months.
After calming him down yesterday, we still thought he had dealt with it remarkably well and weren't expecting any problems last night - at least until he woke. Last night, though, Matthew wouldn't go to sleep without his dummy and started screaming as soon as he was put to bed when we told him that he couldn't because he'd put it in the bin. After ten minutes of screaming and no sign of sleep, we gave in and gave him a new dummy. Normally we would have persevered longer, but Louise had to go and visit her Gran who is in hospital, and I was exhausted at the end of a tiring "staff development" week in work, so we will try again soon.
Matthew went to his meithrin for his first day on Wednesday following his trial visit. He cried when Louise left him, but apparently didn't cry for too long afterwards. I heard that he was quite shy, but he did interact with some other children towards the end of his visit. The meithrin is a lot less structured than his nursery and it sounds like the children mainly have free play, so it is good that he still gets a chance to go to nursery twice a week and engage with other toddlers in structured activities.
